A Big Piece of Wood Work

“Here is my philosophy,” says Bay Wood Products President Jimmy Wilson, from his County Road 64 office, embedded in a skyline of stacked pallet and crate towers. “What we do here is not that difficult; anybody can build a pallet.”

But he adds, “What sets us apart from many others in this industry is we service our customers to death.” In a good way.

BAY WOOD PRODUCTS PRESIDENT JIMMY WILSON SERVES THREE-YEAR TERM ON NATIONAL WOODEN PALLET AND CONTAINER ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Jimmy-Wilson-squareROBERTSDALE, Ala. (January 22, 2015) -- Bay Wood Products Inc.’s President and founder Jimmy Wilson’s twentieth year in business also marks the end of his first three-year term actively serving on the Board of Directors for the National Wooden Pallet and Container Association (NWPCA).

Representing more than 600 business owners across the U.S., Wilson will depart the board in March, 2015, during the association’s annual meeting. Nominated by the membership and then voted into the position in 2012, Wilson said he has been honored to serve with a dynamic group who tackled tough legislative issues then quickly moved on to address strategic and long-range planning for the association.

The National Wooden Pallet and Container Association gives a voice to hundreds of privately owned small businesses who might not otherwise have the means to make themselves heard in Washington and beyond. With a seat on the board, Wilson said he got a firsthand view of what the association does for the wooden pallet and container industry. They successfully manage governmental affairs, always seeking ways to protect the interests of members, staying engaged with lawmakers and quickly communicating news when it will have an impact on how they make a living.

As part of the board, Wilson played a role in protecting pallet and crate manufacturers, and their customers, from new rules that would have all but crippled companies. The International Code Council, who sets building and other code regulations followed by all 50 states, created new rules about the storage of empty pallets and crates. NWPCA formed a task force of board members to tackle the issue. Eventually, some of the board members traveled to Washington to speak before the council.

After NWPCA members lobbied for changes, showing the need for further analysis and study, members of the International Code Council voted not to adopt proposed rules for exterior pallet storage. Had the proposals been adopted, they would have been published with the new codes set to be released this year for consideration by municipal and state authorities. “That was a huge win for our industry and our customers,” Wilson said, “and something I'm proud of.”
